Publication Highlights

Faculty and graduate student publications are only one of the marks of an excellent graduate program, but they are a very important component.

  • We publish in the leading general journals of our discipline. We have published recently in the American Sociological Review, the American Journal of Sociology, and Social Forces.
  • We publish in leading specialty journals. We have published, for example, in Criminology, Work and Occupations, Gender and Society, Administrative Science Quarterly, Rural Sociology, Social Psychology Quarterly, the Journal of Marriage and Family, the Journal of Family Issues, and the Journal of Health and Social Behavior.
  • We publish books, as well. Three of our recent books have captured considerable attention: Small Sacrifices by Anne Schiller, Unlocking the Iron Cage by Michael Schwalbe, and Gender Vertigo by Barbara Risman.
  • Our faculty publishes a lot. Last year, the faculty published 16 articles in refereed journals, 5 book chapters, and 2 books. Click here for 13 years of comparative data.
  • Our graduate students do not wait until after they graduate to publish their work.  In 2007, for example, current NC State graduate students in sociology published or had in press eighteen journal articles and book chapters.  In the past four years NC State students have presented 47 papers at the Southern Sociological Society meetings.
  • Our graduate students collaborate extensively with our faculty. Graduate students enrolled in last ten years have collaborated with our faculty to publish 51 journal articles, 5 book chapters, and a book. The 2009 volume of Annual Review of Sociology will feature two chapters coauthored by recent NC State graduates, each with their mentor: Shannon Davis [Ph.D. 2004, now at George Mason] and Theodore Greenstein, Doug Schrock [Ph.D. 2001, now at Florida State] and Michael Schwalbe. Kevin Stainback [Ph.D. 2005, now at Virginia Tech] and Don Tomaskovic-Devey have a chapter coming out in the 2010 volume.
